Students First....Safety Always

Rosa St Angelo Letter

Dear CCUSD Board Members and Superintendent Ashby,

I am a concerned parent because I believe that the power lines near Sonoran Trails and the faulty wiring in Horseshoe Trails are jeopardizing student's, staff and parent's health.

I have 2 children attending Horseshoe Trails and I love the school and teachers and Mrs. Marlow. I came from another school district and I have been very impressed with this district, but I must say the way that the power line issue has been handled has made me concerned that our children's safety and well being are not being put first.

I am a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and specialized as a hematology/ oncology pediatric nurse for 10 years administering chemotherapy to children and caring for them while they were hospitalized. Childhood leukemia and cancers is a DEVASTATING disease process, not only does the poor child suffer, but so does the entire family.

I have researched EMF's and this entire issue and I realize there are articles that suggest that there is probably no risk, but there are other ones that say the children are at risk. I have spoken to my colleagues at Phoenix Children's Hospital in the Cancer center and they voiced concerns of a school near power lines.

The reason way children are at more risk is because there system is immature and their cell growth rate is more accelerated because they are growing. We have theories in medicine that for certain diseases we do not know what causes them but there may be certain people that have a genetic predisposition to certain diseases. If they are exposed to certain conditions it may influence the cells to become diseased.

I don't know my children's genetic predispositions and don't want to risk them being exposed to potentially harmful radiation putting them at risk. When parents of newly diagnosed Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia patients ask the oncology team "Why does my child have cancer?" we can not give them an exact answer because there are many theories and one of them is as I stated above is exposure to things that damage our cells may make them unhealthy and cause them to not function properly anymore.

I believe in Health promotion and I practice it. I try to limit harmful exposures of anything with my children. I do not let them eat improperly, I limit their sugar intake- they do not snack on candy and chips but on fruits and vegetables, they watch minimal T.V, they take nutritional food supplements, we don't even cook food in the microwave because of EMF exposure.

Therefore when Ms Shaffir made the comment to me that the exposure to the EMF's at school are no different than using a blow dryer and other harmful effects in the environment I became upset because that kind of attitude does not suggest that people representing the school board are looking out for my children and the children and the staff at the school. In my opinion it is not the same risk because one I don't blow dry my children's hair and 2 if I did it would mean that I would being holding a blowdryer to my child's head constant for 6 hours increasing their risk of a brain tumor to equate the same risk as being at school and constantly being exposed to high EMF's.

I am trying to limit harmful exposure to all things as much as I can for my children. I am a child advocate by nature and by profession.
I believe the power lines are too close to Sonoran Trails and I am concerned about the faulty wiring at Horseshoe Trails.

These topics need to be addressed for the safety of the children and staff and even for myself because I am very involved with the school and serve on the PTO Board for HTES.

Please respond to my email as to what can be done, I am not the only parent with these concerns despite the school board stating that parents are not concerned and they have not received any emails from concerned parents. Here is my email of concern!

I was told that the power lines were going to be moved if not before the school year started then shortly after- that is why I never wrote a letter before. I will not send my children to Sonoran Trails if I do not feel that the school is safe and this saddens me because I live close to the school and my kids love HTES and the staff and friends they have made.

Please think about this issue again and please keep the schools safe for our children.

Thank you,

Rosa St Angelo
